What does it actually take to become more like Jesus?
Acts 2:42–47 gives us a picture of the early church devoted to Scripture, prayer, fellowship, shared meals, generosity, and life together. Christianity was never designed as an individual pursuit. Scripture describes the church as both a body and a family because God intends to use other believers as part of the way he forms us.
Matt Chandler describes spiritual formation as “deep work over time in community.” In Becoming Like Jesus, he argues that Jesus transforms more than our outward behavior. He reshapes our loves and desires so that, increasingly, we want what he wants. That kind of formation happens through honest friendship, confession, encouragement, correction, and the shared pursuit of holiness.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer warned, “He who is alone with his sin is utterly alone.” We need brothers and sisters who know us, walk with us, and continually point us back toward Jesus.
As Cedar Springs launches Community Groups this week, we’re looking at why life together is more than another church program. We grow to become more like Jesus by belonging deeply to his people.
