Take Note
How should Christians use their time? What does the Bible teach about making time count, living with purpose, and preparing for eternity?
In Part 4 of our Kingdom Commodities series, “Making Time Count,” Chris Brannon teaches from Psalm 90 and other key passages about the brevity of life, the limits God has placed on our days, and the wisdom of investing our time in what matters most.
Psalm 90:12 says, “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
The Bible does not call us to fear the passing of time, but to understand it rightly. Our lives are brief, our days are known by God, and every opportunity should be viewed through the priorities of His kingdom.
Three ways Christians can number their days:
1. Acknowledge our limits.
Psalm 39:4–5 says, “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath!”
2. Invest in what matters.
Ephesians 5:15–17 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”
Jesus teaches us not to build our lives around anxiety, possessions, or temporary security, but to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness” (Matthew 6:33).
3. Live with eternity in mind.
James 4:14–15 says, “Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”
Paul gives us the proper goal for a life surrendered to Christ:
Acts 20:24 says, “But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”
Our time is limited, but it is not meaningless. In Christ, every day can be used to know Him, serve others, advance the gospel, and press toward the eternal prize of the upward call of God.
