Kingdom Commodities: How Will You Spend Your Life?
We are beginning a new series called Kingdom Commodities, and the central question is simple: how will you spend your life?
Every life is being spent. Every day, every hour, every relationship, every dollar, every gift, every opportunity, and every season is being invested somewhere. The question is not whether your life is being used. The question is whether it is being stewarded for the kingdom of God or squandered on something that cannot last.
In this series, we will look at the gifts God has given us and ask how they can be used to advance His kingdom. We will talk about sex, marriage, family, career, money, rest, time, influence, and the other “commodities” of life that are often taken for granted. Some of these messages will challenge how the world misdirects and corrupts good gifts. Others will show how Scripture elevates those same gifts when they are submitted to Christ.
The Bible gives us a sharp contrast between spending life on temporary treasure and investing life in eternal treasure. Jesus says in Matthew 6:19–21 that we should not lay up treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, but should lay up treasures in heaven. What we treasure will shape our hearts. What we invest in will reveal what kingdom we actually serve.
This message also warns against a shallow understanding of grace. We are saved by grace, not by our works. Titus 3:5 reminds us that God saves us according to His mercy, through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit. But grace without price is not grace of no price. Christ paid for our salvation with His own blood. 1 Peter 1:18–19 reminds us that we were ransomed, not with silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ.
That truth should not produce indifference. It should produce worship, obedience, gratitude, and stewardship. 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 says that we are not our own, because we were bought with a price. Therefore, we are called to glorify God with our bodies and with our lives.
This message closes by looking at the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14–30. In that parable, the issue is not merely money, skills, or productivity. It is faithfulness. The master entrusts something valuable to his servants, and each servant must give an account for what he did with what he was given.
The third servant is not condemned because he lived like the prodigal son. He is condemned because he misunderstood the heart of his master and failed to faithfully invest what had been entrusted to him. He buried what was given to him, and then tried to justify his fear, passivity, and wrong judgment.
Your talent is your life.
God has given you a life to invest for His kingdom. He has placed you in a particular time, family, church, workplace, neighborhood, school, and season. You are not accountable for producing the same return as someone else. You are accountable for what you do with what God has entrusted to you.
Kingdom Commodities has three aims:
First, to increase your awareness of the areas of your life where the kingdom of heaven can be advanced.
Second, to help you see that living for the kingdom of heaven carries a greater reward than anything you can build for yourself in this life.
Third, to call each of us to examine which kingdom we are really serving.
2 Corinthians 4:16–18 reminds us not to lose heart. What is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. The life spent for Christ is not wasted. The life invested in His kingdom bears fruit that lasts.
