Take Note
What does it mean for a Christian man to lead his family well? On Father’s Day 2026, Chris Brannon addresses that question by looking beyond the competing cultural pictures of masculinity and returning to the example of Jesus Christ.
The world often presents two distorted models of manhood. One celebrates domination, emotional suppression, recklessness, and control. The other avoids conflict, refuses responsibility, complains rather than acts, and is easily ruled by emotion. Scripture offers a better way. Biblical masculinity is the glad acceptance of responsibility before God. It means standing watch, protecting what has been entrusted to us, cultivating what is good, and leading with love for the benefit of others.
Jesus is the clearest picture of this kind of strength. He was full of grace and truth. He did not use His authority to dominate, but to serve. He did not treat leadership as a privilege, but as a call to sacrifice. Christian men are therefore called to use their strength in service, to deny themselves, and to love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her.
This message also challenges men to reject the idea that women are conquests or supporting characters in a man’s story. Scripture calls husbands to honor their wives as co-heirs of the grace of life. It calls men to direct discipline first toward themselves, pursuing self-control, godliness, faithfulness, gentleness, and steadfastness. A man’s worth is not secured by status, success, toughness, or performance, but by the God who made and redeemed him.
True headship is not domineering control. It is sacrificial responsibility. It is character before image, purpose before pleasure, and obedience before comfort. Men need honest community where they can receive both encouragement and accountability, and families need men who are willing to think beyond their own comfort and security to the spiritual good of the generations that follow. Men are called to leave a faithful legacy.
