Take Note
Discipleship is not merely about passing along knowledge. It is a shared willingness to set aside self so that Christ may be followed and formed in others.
In 1 Samuel 23:17, Jonathan encourages David with extraordinary humility: “You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you.” Jonathan’s commitment to David meant surrendering his own claim to power, status, and recognition. In that sacrifice, we see a picture of what discipleship requires.
Jesus makes this even clearer when He says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Discipleship begins with self-denial, continues through sacrifice, and points us together toward the reign of Christ.
