Take Note
In this devotional on 2 Peter 1:3 to 15, we look at what it means to be grounded in the finished work of Christ, and at the same time, called to a life of effort, growth, and obedience.
Peter makes it clear that everything we need for life and godliness has already been given to us in Christ. Salvation is not earned, improved, or maintained by our performance. We are confirmed and secure because of what Jesus has done, not because of what we add to it.
But that does not mean we become passive. Peter urges believers to add to their faith virtue, knowledge, self control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love. These qualities do not purchase salvation. They make us fruitful and effective. They are evidence of life, not the cause of it.
Good works are not the root of our salvation, they are the result of it. When we neglect growth, we become ineffective and short sighted. When we pursue maturity, we live in the confidence of our calling.
This devotional is a reminder that assurance and effort are not enemies. We rest in Christ’s finished work, and we walk in the works He prepared for us.
