What truly belongs to us?
We naturally speak about “my money,” “my time,” “my home,” “my abilities,” and “my future.” Yet the Christian life begins with a very different understanding: everything comes from God, everything ultimately belongs to God, and everything we possess has been entrusted to us for His purposes.
Philippians 4:19 reminds us that God supplies every need according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. In Matthew 6:31, Jesus tells His followers not to live anxiously, asking what they will eat, drink, or wear. Our security is not found in tightly holding onto what we have, but in trusting the Father who knows what we need.
2 Corinthians 9:8 teaches that God is able to make all grace abound to us so that, having all sufficiency in all things, we may abound in every good work. God does not provide merely so that we can accumulate, protect, and consume. He provides so that we can serve, give, obey, and participate in the work of His Kingdom.
1 Corinthians 10:26 declares, “The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains.” That truth challenges the entire foundation of the word “mine.” We are not owners in the ultimate sense. We are stewards who have been trusted with God’s resources, opportunities, relationships, and time.
Many of our objections to generosity and obedience begin with anxiety: What if I do not have enough? What if I lose what I have worked for? What if God asks too much? Yet Scripture repeatedly answers those concerns by directing us back to the sufficiency, generosity, and faithfulness of God.
The question is not simply, “What belongs to me?” The better question is, “What has God placed in my hands, and how does He want me to use it?”
