Take Note
Join us for our weekly devotional from Cedar Springs Community Church as we continue our journey through the Bible, seeing how Christ is revealed in every book. This week’s reflection focuses on the Song of Solomon—a poetic book that celebrates love and ultimately points us to the faithful and pursuing love of Jesus Christ.
Steve shares from Song of Solomon 2:4 and 6:3 and reflects on the classic worship chorus “His Banner Over Me Is Love.” We explore the themes of God’s design for love—emotional, physical, and spiritual—and how marriage reflects the covenant between Christ and His people.
Key truths from this devotional:
– Love is a gift from God.
– God is the author of both physical and emotional love.
– Commitment and faithfulness strengthen love.
– Purity honors God's timing and boundaries.
– God’s love pursues us and holds us forever.
Song of Solomon 2:4 (ESV)
“He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.”
Song of Solomon 6:3 (ESV)
“I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine; he grazes among the lilies.”
These verses remind us of the marriage supper of the Lamb and the tender care of Jesus as our Shepherd. Scripture elsewhere affirms this spiritual union:
Ephesians 5:25–27 (ESV)
“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.”
1 Corinthians 6:16–17 (ESV)
“Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, ‘The two will become one flesh.’ But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.”
2 Corinthians 11:2 (ESV)
“For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.”
This week’s message is a reminder that the love we see in Song of Solomon is not merely about human romance—it is a shadow of the greater love of Christ for His bride, the Church.
