Take Note
Why pursue holiness? Why “werk to be more gooder”? In Gooder – Part 2, Pastor Chris Brannon explores what it means to grow in holiness and why the Christian life calls for it. Holiness is not about moral perfection or checking religious boxes. It’s about being set apart, made new, and shaped to look more like Jesus.
The Bible is clear. We are told to flee sin and pursue righteousness (1 Tim. 6:11, 2 Tim. 2:22). We are called to a holy life because it reflects the nature of God Himself (1 Thess. 4:3-8). We don’t work to earn God’s love, but because we already have it. Christ saved us, and now we live like people who have been changed.
Romans 6 reminds us we have died to sin. 2 Corinthians 3 says we’re being transformed, one degree of glory at a time. This isn’t self-help or behavior management. It’s the Spirit of God reshaping us into the image of His Son. That’s why we pursue holiness. That’s why we keep going.
2 Peter 1 shows the path forward: grow in virtue, knowledge, self-control, love. Holiness keeps us fruitful and anchored in truth. Hebrews 12 reminds us that without holiness, no one will see the Lord. Holiness marks the life of someone who truly knows Jesus.
So the question is not, “Do I have to be holy?” It’s “If I’ve been saved, why wouldn’t I want to live differently?”
